The vigil, the hours and days of active dying, can be one of the most sacred yet emotionally overwhelming experiences a family faces. Having a calm, knowledgeable presence in the room can make all the difference.
I provide steady bedside companionship during the vigil, offering gentle reassurance about what is happening, helping to manage comfort measures, and ensuring the person is never alone. I also support family members by giving them space to rest, grieve, or simply be present without carrying the weight alone.
My role is to hold the space with warmth and steadiness, reading cues, offering comfort techniques, guiding breathing and relaxation, and honouring rituals or spiritual practices that are meaningful to the family.
